Are you left brain dominant or right brain dominant?
Would you describe yourself as logical and controlled, or more creative and intuitively emotional? Your answer will weight you more heavily towards being either left brain dominant or right brain dominant.
As mentioned in the previous section, the left hemisphere of the brain is associated with analytical and mathematical ability, while the right hemisphere of the brain is associated with artistic ability and creativity.
Those who are left brain dominant will naturally gravitate to the following tendencies:
- Uses logic and reason
- Thinks in words
- Deals with parts and specifics and thinks sequentially
- Will analyse and deconstruct
- Seeks out order and control
Those who are right brain dominant will naturally gravitate to the following tendencies:
- Uses emotion, intuition, creativity
- Thinks in pictures
- Deals in the whole
- Thinks simultaneously and holistically
- Is spontaneous and free
Interestingly the brain is “cross-wired”, with the left hemisphere controlling movement on the right side of the body, and the right hemisphere controlling movement on the left side of the body.
Although the two hemispheres have a largely similar anatomy, certain tasks tend to be handled by one side of the brain more than the other. Research has argued that this is part of the brain’s formidable efficiency, as to perform duplicate actions on each side of the brain would waste energy and brain power.
Recent research has begun to soften the line of demarcation that distinguishes left brain activity from right brain activity. We are now aware that those distinctions were originally too rigidly made, however the distinctions mentioned above continue to serve as helpful generalisations.
