Do you ever think about your life and find yourself asking ‘who am I’ and ‘where am I going’? In asking this, we are starting to question our identity; how we define ourselves and what we believe we can achieve.
In asking ourselves these questions, we are also admitting either consciously or sub-consciously that we are out of Alignment at our core.
Our core is made up of our Spirit, Mind, Heart, Soul and Body. If just one of these is out of Alignment it can cause us to question ourselves, and the direction that our lives are taking.
In its simplest form, the core of who we are is love. It may sound like a line from a bad romantic movie, but love is the essence from which everything evolves. Love holds all things in place, it bonds our universe, it brings us hope, tranquillity, excitement and helps us recognise [inner] beauty. Unfortunately throughout our lives we accumulate baggage from our own mind and experiences. We scoff at the notion that love is the centre of the universe for fear that it might make us appear weak and lead other people to label us in negative ways.
In order to understand who we are we need to look inside ourselves. We cannot hope to either find or understand ourselves by the way others see us. As humans we can present a persona to the outside world, shaped over years to become the person that ‘fits’.
By looking inside ourselves, and being Authentic with ourselves, we will discover our true identity, the person behind the persona.
Questioning Our Identity
Our ability to grow and transform depends on our willingness to question and explore our identity. In questioning our identity, and where we are in our lives, we need to ask what is behind our feelings and emotions and driving our behaviour? What is driving the feeling that there is something more?
As a starting point, describe how you are feeling now. It may not be as easy as it sounds. Often, 50 per cent of the problem is not being able to express and articulate our own feelings. Instead, ask yourself what sensations you are feeling. This will take you to a deeper level, really searching for the meaning behind what you are feeling and the sensations that this elicits.
The human brain puts labels on our own feelings and sensations. We are not good at understanding the language of the heart as it comes from a position of love, however we do need to understand it in order to put different words behind it and to change the experience that we are having in the outside world.
Although we need to be present in the outside world, we need to look inside ourselves to our essence and our consciousness and ensure that we are being Authentic in our lives in order to be in Alignment. We need to live as our genuine, Authentic self. There is an inherent apprehension associated with being our Authentic selves. We are exposed, which is an uncomfortable feeling, but the flipside of this is that we are free to pursue the life we desire. Our whole being and identity is in Alignment and we are able to live the life we dream and when we take responsibility for ourselves we reaffirm our identity.
Identity in a Changing World
Just as athletes need to redefine themselves as they come to the end of their peak performance, we all need to explore our identities throughout our lives as our roles and the environments in which we live change.
In being open, honest and Authentic, we become from a position of unconditional love, and not from a position of fear, frustration and anxiety. Identity is not based on male and female stereotypes; we are all unique individuals. We therefore need to see people as humans, open our minds and give people permission to talk about their feelings and emotions without fear of ridicule or stigma.
